(CUAAJ Event) Speech by Ms. Atsuko Muraki
(Former-Vice Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare)
The Columbia University Alumni Association of Japan (CUAAJ) cordially invites all Columbia alumni and friends to the special lecture event, titled “How to Promote Work-Style Reforms? —Night to Think about Women’s Active Participation and Diversity” with Ms. Atsuko Muraki, Former-Vice Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.
Ms. Muraki is infamous for wrongly accuse of a fraud and detained for about five months, yet proved her innocence and succeed to be the second women to serve as Vice Minister in the central government. When she joined Ministry of Labour in 1978, years before the enforcement of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law, females were in the minority (2-3%) in the ministry. She married her colleague at age 26 and gave birth to two daughters at age 29 and 35. Because the couple lived far from their homelands, they could not rely on their parents for child raring. Yet, with support from Hoikuen and others, Ms. Muraki managed to balance work and family. After retiring from Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare, she joined Tsuda University as Guest Lecturer and Itochu Corporation as Member of the Board. The event will be a rare opportunity to learn from this incredible woman with deep knowledge acquired through her dedicated work as a public servant and a working mother. Please join us!

About the Lecturer:
Ms. Muraki was born in Kochi prefecture in 1955. After graduating from Kochi University in 1978, she joined Ministry of Labour, where she worked on policies aiding women and those with disabilities in early years. She was promoted to be Director-General of Children and Families Bureau in 2008 and Director-General of Social Welfare and War Victims’ Relief Bureau in 2012. Ms. Muraki served as Vice Minister in the last two years in the ministry between July 2013 and October 2015. Currently, she holds a number of positions, such as Guest Professor of Tsuda University and Member of the Board of ITOCHU Corporation. She is also known as the author of a number of books, including “Akiramenai (Not Giving Up)” (Nikkei BP) and “Watashi wa Makenai (I will not be defeated)” (Chuokoron-Shinsha, Inc.).
コロンビア大学日本同窓会(CUAAJ)主催の講演会のお知らせです。
今回は、元厚生労働次官の村木厚子氏をお迎えし、「働き方改革：女性活躍やダイバーシティーについて考える夕べ」と題して、講演会を開催いたします。
村木氏は、えん罪事件で約５ヶ月間拘束され、苦難の日々を乗り越えながらも、中央省庁で史上二人目の女性事務次官となったことであまりにも有名です。同氏が労働省（当時）に入省したのは、男女雇用均等法施行前の昭和５３年、女性は２-３％という少数派でした。その後、２６歳で同期の男性と結婚し、２９歳と３５歳で出産。ご夫妻の両親も遠方に住んでいたため、夫婦二人で保育園等の助けを得ながら、子育てをし、家庭とキャリアを両立をしてきた方です。退官後の現在は、津田塾大学客員教授や伊藤忠商事株式会社・社外取締役としてご活躍されています。働く母としての経験や、官民学で培われた豊富な知見を踏まえ、女性活躍やダイバーシティーの推進を含む「働き方改革」についてお話しいただく貴重な機会です。多くの皆様のご参加をお待ちしております。

津田塾大学客員教授、元厚生労働事務次官 村木 厚子（むらき あつこ）
１９５５年高知県生まれ。１９７８年高知大学卒業。同年労働省（現厚生労働省）入省。女性政策、障がい者政策などに携わり、２００８年雇用均等・児童家庭局長、２０１２年社会・援護局長などを歴任。２０１３年７月から２０１５年１０月まで厚生労働事務次官。
現在は、津田塾大学客員教授、伊藤忠商事（株）社外取締役など
