About this Event
The Japan Chapter of Columbia Venture Community (CVC) is pleased to invite you to a virtual session with Junji Takaoka (Kevin), Incubation Partner at UTokyo IPC.
What is UTokyo IPC?
UTokyo IPC was established in 2016 as an investment firm fully funded by the University of Tokyo. It is not only engaged in investment activities but also focuses on building a startup ecosystem in the deep tech space. As part of this effort, it is involved in the following initiatives:
- Incubation Support Program
- EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence) Program
- 1st Round (Accelerator Program)
Through these initiatives, UTokyo IPC works to expand the innovation ecosystem at the University of Tokyo and supports the commercialization of new technological seeds.
About Junji Takaoka
Junji joined UTokyo IPC in 2023, where he launched Deep Tech Founders and has been leading startup creation.
Main Activities
- Launching and managing the Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) Program
- Supporting the commercialization of technological seeds centered around the University of Tokyo
- Providing support for innovation projects within the University of Tokyo
- Promoting the business professional dispatch program to US VCs under the Catalyst Program (Japan Cabinet Office’s project)
- Serving as a director at Komehyo Co., Ltd. (Japan's No. 1 brand second-hand goods company), where he is also involved in the innovation of publicly listed companies.
Background
- After graduating from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management (MBA) and McCormick School of Engineering (Ms in Design Innovation), Junji worked as an EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence) at Draper Nexus USA (currently known as DNX USA).
- In 2017, he founded UsideU (a startup focused on remote customer service and AI) and successfully exited by selling the company in 2020.

高岡氏は2023年に東大IPCへ参画し、Deep Tech Founders（ディープテックファウンダーズ）を立ち上げ、スタートアップ創造をリードしています。

Junji Takaoka (Kevin) | Incubation Partner, UTokyo IPC
In 2023, Junji Takaoka, Kevin, joined UTokyo IPC as an Incubation Partner. He established Deep Tech Founders and assumed responsibility for various key aspects, including the Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) program, EIR community design, entrepreneurship development, and the commercialization of technology seeds from researchers, ultimately fostering the creation of startups from the ground up.
In 2005, immediately following his university graduation, he embarked on a startup journey in Shanghai. By 2007, he had returned to Japan and commenced work at the strategic consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton (now Strategy&). In 2009, he became a part of Alibaba Japan's President's Office, actively contributing to the development of numerous new ventures as Alibaba experienced rapid growth, transforming into a global IT giant.
In 2016, he served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) at Draper Nexus in Silicon Valley (now DNX USA). Then, in 2017, he founded UsideU, focusing on remote customer engagement and AI as the business domain. In 2020, he achieved a successful exit through the sale of the company. Currently, he holds positions as a board member at Komehyo Co., Ltd. and an advisor at UsideU Co., Ltd.
Kevin holds degrees from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law, an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, and a Master's in Design Innovation from Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Apart from his professional pursuits, Kevin is a jazz enthusiast and considers playing the double bass a lifelong passion.

2023年より東大IPCにてインキュベーションパートナーとして参画、Deep Tech Founders (ディープテックファウンダーズ)を立ち上げ、EIRの制度やコミュニティ設計、起業家育成及び各大学研究員による技術シードの事業化を担当。ゼロイチフェーズのスタートアップ創造を担当。
2005年大学卒業と同時に上海にて起業参画。2007年日本に戻り、戦略コンサルティングファーム ブーズ・アレン・ハミルトン（現 Strategy&）で勤務の後、2009年より年アリババ日本に社長室として参画。アリババがグローバルITジャイアントへと急成長を遂げる中で数々の新規事業に携わる。
2016年シリコンバレー VC Draper Nexus（現 DNX USA）にてEIR（客員起業家）を経て、2017年遠隔接客及びAIを事業領域とするUsideUを起業。2020年売却EXIT。㈱コメ兵取締役、㈱UsideU顧問。
